EDITOR ’ S LETTER
History , agriculture , and the arts make up the rich tapestry of Life in Leek
With the distinctive aroma of barbecues filling the air of an evening , when the weather allows , it can only mean one thing , that summer has arrived in the Queen of the Moorlands .
The old proverb ‘ time flies when you ’ re having fun ’ must hold some truth since we seemed to have reached the halfway point of 2013 within the mere blink of an eye .
What with the town ’ s Arts Festival , the monthly Totally Locally Markets , exhibitions and even a royal visit having already taken place , there certainly has been plenty to keep everyone busy and occupied up to now .
But the excitement doesn ’ t stop there . In this edition of Leek Life we take a look at the forthcoming Britannia Leek and District Show set to take place at the end of July , delve into the secret lives of the former members of Leek ’ s Embroidery Society , and drop in on the ladies of Westwood Golf Club as they host a glitzy Royal Ascot day , its all part of the rich tapestry of Life in Leek .
Here at Leek Life , for this our third issue , we have also teamed up with local tourist attraction Blackbrook Zoological Park to offer two lucky young readers the chance to try their hand at becoming a zookeeper for the day , a fantastic prize for any animal lovers out there .
And finally a relatively unknown issue is brought to the forefront thanks to the dedication and continued fundraising efforts of local couple Dianne and Martin Parr who lost their 21 year old son Christopher to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome in 2010 .
By working closely with the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young ( CRY ) a second heart screening clinic will be taking place in Leek this September for 14 to 35 year olds . See the full article on page 23 .
And so from me and the team here at Leek Life , enjoy the summer and please remember to let us Deborah know if you have an event ,
group , club or organisation you would like to see written about . x
