More than just ‘Jam and Jerusalem’
t is a common misconception that the W.I.
(Womens Institute) is only about ‘Jam and
Jerusalem’, a myth something Woodcroft W.I.
based in Leek are keen to dispel.
Speaking to Leek Life about Woodcroft W.I.
which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary,
Carolyn Jones explained how there is much more
to their organisation.
“We do sing Jerusalem on special occasions and
some of our members enjoy making jam, but that
is not only what we are all about.
“Our W.I., Woodcroft, has been based in Leek
for 40 years this year, providing our members with
an inexpensive night out once a month, in which
we spend time with a friendly group of people
whilst learning about a wide range of subjects in a
light-hearted and often humourous way.
“Members plan a varied programme to suit all
tastes from belly dancing to poetry. We also learn
from each other too, sharing skills and experiences
and enjoying each other's company on trips and
outings.”
Age is also something the W.I. is often pigeon
holed for with the impression often given that it is
just for older generations, something Carolyn also
went on to clarify: “Younger women seem to think
that the W.I. is not for them, but many of our
members joined when they were young
