Badgers don't hibernate either, although they do spend more time underground during winter and they sleep for longer than at other times of the year. This helps them to save energy, but it isn't actually hibernation. Hibernating animals need somewhere sheltered where they won't be disturbed all winter. You can help your garden wildlife by leaving piles of logs and leaves in corners of the garden where species can spend the winter undisturbed in your home-made ‘hibernaculum’. Please be aware, however, that wild animals will not differentiate between your wildlife log-pile and a soon-to-be lit bonfire. Always check bonfire piles, or move and remake them before lighting, to allow wildlife to make a quick getaway! You can also create bug hotels. The simplest design is a plant pot filled with lengths of hollow bamboo canes – or you could build a high rise with lots of nooks and crannies for small invertebrates to shelter within.
