How to help Herefordshire’s fieldfare
Unfortunately, fieldfare are on the UK ‘red list’
meaning urgent action is required to halt the
decline of the population. In Herefordshire, many
landscapes are still good for fieldfare with orchards,
thick hedgerows and old meadows all providing
ideal feeding areas – it is important these features
remain in our county.
Including native berry-bearing trees and shrubs in
your garden, will be great for fieldfare – along many
other birds. Rowan is a pretty, smallish tree which is
great in a garden and laden with berries in autumn.
Holly is similarly decorative and can be grown as a
tree or used for hedging. In a cold snap, fieldfares will
also be very grateful for apples thrown onto a lawn.
