YOUR WINTER PREP CHECKLIST FROM OEM

H i Neighbor. With the summer months bidding us a goodbye and colder weather around the corner, it’ s time to prepare.

First, our community has many senior citizens and when cold, stormy weather hits, it’ s a good time to check on their welfare and needs.
Second, it’ s time to prepare for our needs and safety during the winter season. The following list of issues and concerns can assist in preparation for certain events.
• In colder weather, the tires on your car can lose pressure that could prove difficult for handling the ride; take time and check periodically.
• Prepare for snow and ice by having shovels and brooms handy along with a bag of de-icer. I prefer a bag of fertilizer; it’ s better for surrounding soil.
• Remember the borough has a sidewalk ordinance that has guidelines for snow removal within 12 hours.
• For those of us who have gas powered snow blowers, check the dip stick for lube oil and refresh the gas along with starting prior to use. It would be smart to check the tires for pressure also.
• For houses with older windows and sashes with a need to winterize, I suggest the use of storm window rubber striping to fill the gaps rather than tape. Use a putty knife to press the strip into the openings.
• For residents who have and use fireplaces, make sure older chimneys are lined. The wood used for burning should be seasoned to eliminate creosote buildup and to prevent chimney fires.
• Another fire preventive tip is to not use wax candles for light during power outages. A good idea is to purchase re-chargeable lanterns or lanterns with batteries.
• Check your list of phone numbers for emergency help and don’ t forget to include utilities. Don’ t wait until they are needed.
• Check your gutters and leaders and be sure to channel water away from your home’ s foundations. A piece of plastic piping provides an excellent addition.
• Finally, be sure to change the filters on your hot air furnace and for those with hot water systems, be sure and lubricate the circulating pump with 3 and 1 oil.
At this time allow me to wish everyone a safe winter and joyful holiday season and don’ t forget your senior neighbors. Lex Saharic

We need passionate, committed individuals / families like YOU who can offer loving guidance and support to children while their birth family mends.
