Prisons
United States Federal Penitentiary
A special Act of Congress initiated the process of constructing the United
States Federal Penitentiary (USP) in Leavenworth in 1897. Inmates from the
military prison at Fort Leavenworth began its construction with the first cell
house opening in 1906. The USP was completed in the mid-1920s and was the
largest maximum security prison in the federal system until 2005 when it was
downgraded to medium security status. The wall, imposing front structure and
bison can be photographed on the south side of Metropolitan Avenue.

fort since May 15, 1875. This military prison was the first prison in the U.S. to
offer vocational training for inmates. It is the only maximum security military
prison in the Department of Defense and has male inmates from all the armed
