You’ve probably heard the name Leavenworth and thought immediately of our
infamous federal prison. It's true - we are home to the United States Penitentiary,
also known as “The Big House,” and it’s a part of our deep-rooted history, but
we’re so much more than just that. We’re also home to a 28-block historic
downtown shopping district filled with family-owned, and many Veteran-owned,
small businesses. We’re home to Fort Leavenworth, also known as “The Army
University, the Intellectual Center of the Army, and the Best Hometown in the
Army." Let’s not forget one of the largest carousel museums in the country, the
C.W. Parker Carousel Museum. We also have the distinguished honor of having four
finalists for the 8 Wonders of Kansas in architecture, cuisine, history and people.
Follow the Glacial Hills and Frontier Military Historic Scenic Byways and find your
way to our quaint and friendly community. While you’re here, we’ll treat you like
family and make you feel at home. Founded in 1854 and nestled along the mighty
Missouri River, we are Leavenworth, “The First City of Kansas!”
