Schema theory states that we develop two different forms of schema - recall schema and recognition schema.
RECALL SCHEMA is stored information abour how to produce a movement made up of the inital conditions and the response specification. It is used prior to movement.
Initial conditions are the knowledge we have of the enviroment, body position, limb position and muscle tension etc before we start.
Response (movement) specification referrs to the motor proramme and the movement objective.
RECOGNITION SCHEMA is the information that allows the performer to evaluate their performance and their movements. This is also made up of two components - Sensory consequences and repsonse (movement) outcome.
Sensory consequences are the initial (kinaesthetic) feedback we recieve as we undertake the movement. This can also be called knowledge of performance and is a form of intrinsic feedback.
Response (movement) outcome is the result of the movement compared to the objective. This is also called knowledge of results.
SUMMARY:
Recall Schema:
- before moevement
- initial conditions
- knowledge of enviroment
- body position
- limb position
- muscle tension
- response movement speciaifcation
- motor programmes
- movement objective
Recognition Schema:
- during and after movement
- sensory consequenses
- sensory feedback
- internal kinaesthetic
- reponse outcome
- result of movement compared to movement
