Skill 35:
Use the correct tense with time expressions.
* It is important to learn how to use tenses with time expression (Past
perfect, Simple past, and Present perfect)
-Past perfect: Refers to a time earlier than before now.
-Simple Past: It is used to talk about a completed action in a time before
now.
-Present Perfect: It is used to indicate a link between the present and the
past.
Examples: 1.We moved to New York in 1980 ( the time expression in
1980 indicate that the verb is in the simple past)
2.The had left there by 1990 ( the time expression by 1990
indicate that the verb should be in the past perfect “had left”)
3.we have lived in San Francisco since 1999 (the time
expression since 1999 indicate that the verb is in the present perfect
“have lived”)
