Though many places such as “Take2” and “Pick Up Please” are doing a great job reducing electronic waste it is not enough. There are more things that every person, every family, and every town can do:
I get it. We all want the newest, sleekest, and “in” phone. Or you want a Mac Book instead of your huge clunky computer. But why not continue to use the product until it truly reaches the end of it’s life. You can go to fix your precious IPhone when the battery is dead, it’s not going to be easy.
Fix Instead of Replacing
Most companies make their products unfixable where it is hard to replace parts. Wouldn't it be nice if all phones could be repaired quickly and easily. Compaines could make it easier to replace parts and that would help many people.
Currently, there are few places to bring you electronic waste to. Many people are unaware that they can recycle e-waste. What happens if your town doesn’t have a certified drop off location? What if each town had more drop off sites, that could become safe places to drop off the old electronics ? What if each store that sold electronics had to offer the consumer the option to return the product? After being returned to the retailer, it would have to be disposed of properly. Perhaps, there could be some awareness made of what to do with the product when it expires by the retailer. Also, maybe your local police or fire station could have a drop off point.
