Learning About E-Waste With The Wolcott Nitrobots E-Waste | Page 16

E-waste recycling companies

There are many companies that handle waste but there are not that many that handle e- waste. One of the companies found after doing research about was Nextcut. This company primarily recycles hard drives, servers, DLT tape and sim cards.

The other company I researched was Take 2. According to a representative from this earth friendly business, it is the only Certified recycling company in Connecticut. Our team got to visit Take 2 and see how they take apart electronics legally. We were given a tour and got to decorate anything from soccer balls to hats with recycled parts from screws to electronic boards. . It was amazing and fun. The other E-waste companies are outside Connecticut. We asked Gina Chiarella, the owner of Take 2, some questions about how hard is it to get certified. Mrs. Chirella replied “There is a robust vetting process that the state of Connecticut Department of energy and environmental protection requires all recycles that apply to become a covered electronic Recycler”. A Vetting Process is a very thorough background check of a person or group .

Our next question: What else in involved with running an e waste company?

Also recyclers must be

An improved, permetted recycler and be in compliance with all Connecticut regulations

Maintain 3/6 million pollution liability insurance.

Keep ced’s separate from non ced’s

Maintain records of shipments to downstream processors and proof of receipts from those processors \

Incorporate policies and procedures to ensure that only computers , monitors, printers, and television from CT residents are included as CEDs and billed to manufacturers

Develop procedures for sorting, processing, tracking, recording, transporting, and recycling all CEDs

Maintain and O&M Plan and EHSMS program that ensure a safe and healthy work environment and the best management practices with regard to handling and recycling of used electronics

As you can see there are many, many factors that go into owning and running a Certified E-waste Reccyling Business. Thank you Mrs. Chiarella for all your hard work and dedication to keeping our planet healthy!
