E-Waste In Other Countries
Millions of mobile phones, laptops, tablets, toys, digital cameras and other electronic devices, bought this Christmas are destined to create a flood of dangerous "E-waste". The UN has warned, that it is being dumped illegally in developing countries like India, China, Egypt, Pakistan and Mexico.
The UN is getting involved with E-waste trying to send it back where it came from instead of sending it to poor countries. This E-waste is being dumped Into poor countries because they are looking to salvage anything for money. The United Nations states that recycled E- waste is being burnt and producing ash rivers like the one in Giuyu. It is not handled correctly.
The global volume of electronic waste is expected to grow by 33% in the next four years. It will weigh the equivalent of eight of the great Egyptian pyramids. leaving all these poor countries that are unskilled to deal with E-waste. This will emit harmful gases to circle the earth and the people on it. Once in a landfill, these toxic materials seep out into the environment, contaminating land, water and the air. China has gotten so bad that 75% of their own water is contaminated. This leaves the 1% of drinkable water on earth to soon be .5% and it can get even worse do to all the other countries dealing with E-waste.
According to the Step report, E-waste – which extends from old fridges to toys and even motorized toothbrushes – is now the world's fastest growing waste stream leaving Norway and Switzerland the highest rated E-waste offenders. The average E-waste generated in a year in the U.S. is 3.412 million tons and even more in Russia.
