Down on the Farm at Middletown
There’s always a lot going on at Middletown farm; fortunately there is some good company and fun along with all the very hard work.
It has been a busy December selling Christmas geese. It was the best year yet although a disappointing one for the local fox – he didn’t get a single goose this year. All but two of the dressed geese were sold and everybody is reporting back on how delicious they were.
We currently have Avian Flu in England and DEFRA have asked for all poultry to be housed. Normally, our geese go out to play with fresh clean water in their paddling pools every day. It is a treat to look forward to and they come out on full honking volume in eager excitement. At the moment, the geese get a fresh bed and food and water each morning along with the huge disappointment of staying in. Marco, who is the most important and handsome person in the entire World, according to himself, is furious. He has a daily scream about the unsatisfactory situation and anybody who goes near him has little bruises on their legs where he has bitten them.
The mud situation is wet and slippery and ghastly. Early morning frosts help a bit but all the local farmers are hoping the land will dry out soon and please don’t mention flooding.
Last year’s lambs are coming up to a year old. There are two lovely young Jacob rams who, hopefully, will do well in the show ring. The main breeding flock is doing well; hopefully all the ewes are pregnant and will have their lambs in about mid February.
We have had a meeting for all the producers who sell their wares in the shop. They are a welcoming bunch of people and keen to introduce new producers with exciting new products. There is a surprising amount to do for a small farm shop including preparing this article for our new look colour parish magazine which everybody is dying to see!
