The possibilities are endless The rarely seen third floor of the Greater Elkhart Chamber building is getting a closer look, and may become the next hot spot for entrepreneurs. The Chamber recently sought opinions for the design of a unique work or meeting space on the top level of 418 S. Main St. A grant from the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau covered the study, and ideas will be presented later this year to the board of directors. No commitment for funding has been made for construction, and it’s not yet known whether any of the proposals will even be accepted. Kyle Hannon, the Chamber’s president and CEO, says the opportunity to study the prospect was too good to pass up. “Elkhart is the undisputed home of entrepreneurs,” Hannon says. “With so many great things happening in the downtown area resulting from SoMa, and with the Chamber traditionally being a champion for small business development and growth, we felt this was the right time to see what was possible with our third floor.” Currently, the space is underutilized as storage. The hardwood floors and plaster walls tell the story of a different era – long before other such spaces on Main became upscale loft apartments in the SoMa district. The space being studied is approximately 6,000 square feet.
