• Living without direction or hope
• Being separated from God
And God’ s response to that darkness is not anger first— it is compassion.
He sees people not just for their actions, but for their condition.
This is critical for the church to understand. If we only see behavior, we may respond with judgment. But when we see spiritual blindness, we begin to respond with compassion.
“ We are not just called to share the gospel. We are called to do it with the heart of God.”
God’ s Desire: Mercy Over Destruction
Jonah acknowledges a powerful truth: God is“ eager to turn back from destroying people.”
• God warns before He judges
• He sends messengers before consequences
• He offers grace before justice
Nineveh was not spared because they were good— it was spared because God is good.
The Church’ s Calling: Reflect His Heart
The message of Jonah 4 is not just about God’ s character— it’ s about our calling.
God didn’ t just want Jonah to deliver a message. He wanted Jonah to carry His heart.
And that is still true for the church today.
We are not just called to:
• Preach truth
• Share the gospel
• Reach the lost
We are called to do it with the heart of God.
This reveals that judgment is not God’ s preference— mercy is.
God does not delight in punishment. His heart leans toward restoration, redemption, and forgiveness.
Throughout Scripture, we see this pattern:
1. A Heart of Compassion
God’ s compassion extends to all people— even those far from Him.
The church must resist the temptation to categorize people as“ deserving” or“ undeserving.” Compassion does not discriminate. It flows from understanding
