Creating a Culture where Employees Thrive DOUGLAS K. SHAW

My mother taught me many things that shaped my soul. Her influence came in the feelings of the safety she created for her children, the natural waves of conversation, and the gentle teachings and guidance of a loving parent. It’ s the culture she created at home that serves as my model for a community that allows for acceptance, encouragement, and belief— a curative culture.
My father was the very definition of the“ hunter-gatherer,” toiling to feed his family of six. His intelligence and creativity, coupled with his strongly tested survival instincts, formed so much of the person I bring to my work community.
This cursory telling of my own beginnings is woven together with those of my coworkers to ultimately influence the culture of our work community. Simply put, each of us brings who we are into our work environment. The intrigue of it all is how many stories we each possess, and to a very high degree, how they possess us. It’ s fascinating to consider the resulting chorus of culture.
