One of my favorite humans in the multiverse , Michael Gungor , did a wonderful job explaining this conundrum in his book The Crowd , the Critic , and the Muse . When he went on his first silent retreat in Italy , he described it like a barrel of water rolling down a hill . When you first start practicing silence , it ’ s like the barrel has hit the bottom and comes to a sudden stop . Except the water inside the container is still sloshing around like a wave pool . He said it usually takes about three days for the water to finally become still . And that ’ s when the inner silence truly begins .
And so it is with us . We are like barrels of water rolling down a hill at all times . And then we try our hardest to slow down and stop . But even though our body ’ s movement
