Obedience is valued over creativity . The second is the concept of the Renaissance man , an intellectual philosopher who would gain mastery of the sciences , the arts , and the humanities .
This is why a college degree takes four years today . They want you to be well-rounded , so you end up taking geology and wasting precious hours of your life studying rocks . Don ’ t get me wrong : If you went through the school system without learning how to read , write , and count , the school system failed you . But here ’ s the real problem . If we ’ re supposed to be good at everything , education becomes all about dabbling . If the original concept was to make everyone great
at everything , we have done the opposite — we ’ ve made everyone average at everything . Maybe the first eighteen years of our lives would have been better spent learning to be average at almost everything — except your one thing .
Truth be told , I was a terrible student . But the moment I left school , it was no longer about who could achieve while sitting behind a desk in the safety of a classroom . Now it was about who could survive the streets and create a future out of nothing . Gone was the emphasis on memorizing material . It was about who could adapt to change and capitalize on uncertainty .
