Reorienting: Work, Rest, and Delight Travis West

Work is love made visible. Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet
There is something unifying in this annual act of tidying the world. Every day the news is full of all we can’ t set right. But we can drag the rake through the yard so that we can see the path again. Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer,“ Raking the Leaves with Jack”
The prophet Isaiah reminds us that God longs for us to“ call the Sabbath a delight”( Isaiah
58:13). Delight is such a powerful word, naming an experience that stands at the heart of what it means to be human. I understand delight as that elusive rush of energy and presence experienced by someone who is fully alive in a moment. It lives at the intersection of joy, presence, connection, and play. Play opens our hearts to curiosity and new experiences; connection multiplies our delight because it’ s shared; the present moment is the only threshold to delight; and joy is delight’ s oldest companion.
