I never cease to be amazed at how powerfully God speaks when we let His Word speak for itself .
“ Keep doing this until I tell you to stop .”
When I was a junior in college , I stepped into a chapel service led by David Platt . He opened the service by saying , “ Please open your Bibles to Romans chapter one .” He began to read . About halfway through the chapter , I looked up and realized that he wasn ’ t reading . He was quoting ! “ He ’ s going to quote the first chapter of Romans !” I thought . And he did . Then he quoted chapter two . . . chapter three . . . chapter four . Eight chapters later he stopped and gave us a challenge to memorize the Word of God . Fifteen hundred students , including myself , came away from that chapel service profoundly stirred and inspired .
As a musical theater major , I had started a drama team at a local church . After Platt ’ s challenge , I told one of my fellow team members , “ If he , as a pastor , can rattle off eight chapters of the book of Romans with very little emotion or expression , and we can come away from that so impacted ; how much more so can we , as actors , memorize and internalize the Word of God and present it in a way that is even more impactful ?” The two of us decided to memorize the book of James together . When we performed it for our local church , God ’ s Spirit moved more powerfully than in any other drama we had ever done or seen up to that point . The response from the congregation afterward was overwhelmingly positive and brimming with emotional and spiritual intensity . So we said , “ Let ’ s do this again !” We got the whole team together to memorize and perform the book of Ephesians . Once again , God ’ s Spirit moved mightily . A few days later , as I was about to walk into another college chapel service , a woman from church came up to me . Through tears , she thanked me for sharing the Word of God from the stage in such a potent way . She shared how much God had used it in her life . I was overwhelmed with God ’ s Spirit as I left that conversation and entered a time of worship in the chapel . I knelt before the Lord and wept , feeling so unworthy to be used by the Lord in this way . As I worshiped , God ’ s voice spoke clearly to my heart , “ Keep doing this until I tell you to stop .” That was 2006 .
Today , I continue in that calling by serving as the Founder and Executive Director of a fulltime ministry called Piercing Word . As theatre professionals , we are passionate about coming alongside Christian leaders to ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the Church . We do that by performing Scripture in dramatic and musical productions that are word-for-word from the ESV Bible . We send teams to perform Scripture across the country at conferences , churches , colleges , special events , and more . I never cease to be amazed at how powerfully God speaks when we let His Word speak for itself . We also challenge and equip people wherever we go to memorize God ’ s Word for themselves with our Bible memorization resources such as our Warriors of the Word book and video course . Nearly every pastor I know has preached a sermon on the importance of God ’ s Word and why we should meditate on and memorize it . But most pastors and Christian leaders struggle to get their people to engage deeply with the Word of God , by reading , studying , and memorizing it for themselves . The average American home has around 7 Bibles sitting
