Over the years , churches I ’ ve led and served have partnered with various other churches that were similar . Although we have the highest esteem for the folks at these churches , we would never dream of creating a cookiecutter copy of their church in Hawaii . It would never work . Why ? Because we have two very different constituencies — two very distinct congregations . We have , however , applied some of their hammering techniques in the way we pounded out our own trumpet . One church had a food court filled with Midwest cuisine , such as hot dogs and pizza . We have potlucks laden with the many ethnic dishes of Hawaii . Even website designs should only be adapted to your own site to reflect a similar innovative “ realness ” to appeal to the people of your area .
When you attend a conference , read a leadership book ( even this one ), or hear about the latest move of God in another church , do not superimpose that vision onto your own church . Learn all you can , of course , for a desire to continually learn is the mark of a visionary . But remember that simplistic duplication has no value and , in fact , may hurt your organization .
