bag of chips to make me happy instead of God. Is food your comforter?
Other people see food as fuel. Its purpose is to meet their nutritional needs, not their emotional and spiritual ones. What about you? What is your relationship with food? Only God can satisfy the longing of your heart. Perhaps that is why Jesus said,“ I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty”( John 6:35).
Imagine if we looked to bread to meet our nutritional needs and looked to the bread of life— Jesus— to meet our spiritual needs! Imagine if we honestly searched our hearts and asked this uncomfortable question,
“ Have I made food my idol? Have I given it Godlike power in my life?” In his book, The Maker’ s Diet, Jordan Rubin writes,“ In our era, we have allowed food to become our idol. Too many people admittedly‘ live to eat.’”
The Bible does not teach,“ Taste and see that the Snickers Bar and Pepsi are good.” Instead, it teaches,“ Taste and see that the Lord is good”( Psalm 34:8).
If food has become your idol, pray, God, please forgive me for making food my idol. As of today, I look to food to meet my nutritional needs and to You to meet my spiritual needs. By faith, I choose to look to You for comfort, not food. Please satisfy the deep longings of my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
