greatness . Keep an eye out for a hyperfocus on yourself .
Comparison Comparing ourselves with others can occasionally offer short bursts of increased speed but is hopeless ( and damaging ) when we rely on it as our main source of fuel . Why ? Because comparison without context is useless . This is what I mean : A professional team shouldn ’ t be exhilarated when they ’ re able to beat Pleasant Valley High School varsity . And on the flip side , Pleasant Valley players shouldn ’ t be demoralized when they lose to top-tier professionals . Measuring themselves against each other doesn ’ t give either team the fuel they need to reach their next level of greatness .
When I started leading what is now Union
Church , few churches were using social media platforms to get the word out about their impact and ministry . Just a handful of church communicators posted clips of their messages on Instagram or Facebook , for example . We immediately started utilizing social media to expand Union Church ’ s reach , but since there weren ’ t many others doing the same thing , we had to kind of make it up as we went along . There weren ’ t many others to compare ourselves with . On the negative side , it was a lot of work because we couldn ’ t just copy what others were already succeeding with . But on the positive side , we weren ’ t easily inflated or deflated based on how we compared with others .
