“ Our conscience knows the truth . Similarly , our conscience knows the smoke and mirrors of a lie .”
Before this happens , though , we all have equal access to a conscience that helps us know the truth . Romans 2:15 explains that our conscience has been given to us to bear witness to what we do and say :
They show the work of the Law written in their hearts , their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them .
Your conscience ought to make you feel guilty when you think or do something contrary to the truth . It also ought to make you feel confirmed when you think or do something that aligns with the truth .
God tells us clearly that we are without an excuse for not knowing the Source of truth . He has given us plenty of obvious clues . Romans 1:20 says :
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes , His eternal power and divine nature , have been clearly seen , being understood through what has been made , so that they are without excuse .
God has demonstrated His truth and His presence throughout the matrix of His creation . He has placed in every human heart the knowledge of the reality of His created order . The fact that God knows what He is doing is evident not only by what He has made , but by what He sustains every moment of every day .
As long as God is part of the equation then there is a standard for what is right and what is wrong . There is a standard for how we are to treat each other as human beings made in His image . There exists a standard for how we are to respond to God as our Lord and King over all . And yet , while creation attests to God ’ s power , attributes , and presence ( Psalm 19:1 ), so many people have chosen to intentionally disregard Him . So many have chosen to pretend He isn ’ t there simply because we cannot see Him in this realm .
You and I cannot see air , yet we depend upon it for our existence . We can ’ t see wind , but we can see its effects . We can ’ t see oxygen , and yet we still breathe . If we were to declare that air , wind , and oxygen no longer exist because we cannot see them , and we have the right to breathe whatever we want instead , we wouldn ’ t last much longer than to the end of this article . You and I can ’ t replace oxygen with whatever we want and still expect to breathe . Neither can we try to replace God and have anything good come of it . Yet that is exactly what our culture is seeking to do .
“ Your conscience ought to make you feel guilty when you think or do something contrary to the truth . It also ought to make you feel confirmed when you think or do something that aligns with the truth .”
