room door . My high school coach , Coach Ellinger , had driven an hour and a half and was standing there .
He walked in , sat down across from me on my roommate ’ s bed , and said , “ So this is the kind of person you are , huh ? I never saw you as a quitter .”
I told him to go some places and to do some things . ( Remember , this was before I was a Christian , and I still had an unsanctified vocabulary .)
I was furious at the world , but his shockingly generous gesture gave me pause . My former coach dropped everything to drive one hundred miles to my dorm room to talk to me . The gravity of the moment set in . Somehow , I sensed there was more at stake in this whole situation than just a tennis match .
My coach gathered himself and spoke to me almost prophetically . He said words I would never forget . “ Craig , this is a big day in your life . I ’ m glad I ’ m here to get to see it . Today you are gonna determine what kind of person you are . Are you like most people ? Will you give up when things get tough ? Or will you finish what you started ? Do you quit in the face of adversity ? Or will you overcome ?”
His question hung in the air for what seemed like eternity .
So I ask you , What kind of person are you going to be ?
You may not have broken all of your tennis rackets or cursed at your coach in your dorm
