Tragically , Nan was killed when her car was hit by a train , leaving Lea to not only raise her own three children , but also her nephew , Andy , who was orphaned by the accident .

Fred returned home in 1945 – and after a brief stint teaching English at Burr & Burton Academy – he moved forward in his law career .
Lea continued to put her career as an artist on hold as she raised the children .
