Timing Brief description Reference
This project supports graziers to make changes to management practices to reduce sediment losses and improve the quality of water entering the reef , building on the outcomes of Reef Trust Phase I . By June 2019 , six properties in the priority East Burdekin and Bowen-Broken-Bogie basins would have implemented cost-effective gully remediation and management practices for sediment reduction . This is supported by the preparation of whole-of-property sediment management plans , remediation plans for prioritized gullies , demonstration projects , extension and training events and robust monitoring ( linked to NESP Project 2.1.4 ).

The objective of this project is to improve the quality of water entering the Great Barrier Reef . To achieve this objective , this project will undertake cost effective erosion gully restoration in conjunction with the Don River Improvement Trust ( DRIT ), a Queensland statutory authority as well as Bowen and Collinsville Landcare Inc . Two sites have been selected as representative of the gully systems in the upper Don River catchment and will be used as ongoing demonstration & monitoring sites . A range of stakeholders within the Bowen region will participate including local property owners involved in agricultural enterprises . |

Current
current
The programme is designed to provide assistance to help graziers implement changes that improve management practices and productivity , while also reducing agricultural runoff into the Great Barrier Reef lagoon .
The project will work with property owners in the Bowen / Bogie and East Burdekin catchments . Along with interventions which will prevent the movement of sediment and new erosion , this project will improve the condition of vegetation within and adjacent to ( buffering ) watercourses . This will directly improve ecosystem services ( economic and biodiversity values ) in the location of intervention , as well as buffering these watercourses from the impacts of adjacent noncompatible land management practices . By reducing , stabilising and intercepting sediment higher in the catchment this project will help reduce the extent and severity of impacts on marine biodiversity

The project is a collaboration between QG and Greening Australia under the Reef Innovation Fund . The primary purpose of the project is to trial different techniques for gully remediation in the Burdekin region to deliver more cost effective solutions that can be applied across GBR regions . |

Current data sets
The project has developed a gully prioritization tool for the Burdekin that will provide a level of certainty that any future investment in gully remediation in this priority catchment provides the greatest sediment reduction outcome for the Reef . https :// www . nqdrytropics . com . au / projects / sustainableagriculture / pointsource-sedimentmanagement /
