READ THE CARES REQUIREMENTS THOROUGHLY BEFORE APPLYING .
NOTE : In order for us to support the optional CARES DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM , parents MUST be able to meet the requirements outlined below :
• LCSD students must have been promoted during the previous school year and received Tier 1 or Tier 2 instruction .
• Approved applications will be in effect on a nine week basis . Students choosing the CARES model are expected to complete nine weeks of online instruction . There will be an opportunity to transfer from CARES to the school / enhanced traditional classroom setting at the end of each nine-week period . When moving from CARES to Enhanced Traditional , there is a chance a student ' s schedule may change due to course availability .
• CARES students will follow the academic calendar approved by the school board .
• Students will access learning daily through distance learning on Monday through Friday using interactive and independent activities .
• Normal attendance is mandatory . Attendance will be taken each day .
• Students are required to be on time and fully present for each class and engaged at all times , as required by the teacher .
• Students must be able to access instructional materials using the LCSD Learning Management Systems ( Google Classroom for grades K-4 / Canvas for grades 5-12 ).
• Students will be responsible for new material using the regu-lar pacing guide , graded assignments and other assessments .
• Students will adhere to all LCSD grading policies and procedures during distance learning .
• Parents must be able to transport their child / children to their home school as required for proctored assessments , as required .
• A device will be available to students who are currently enrolled in LCSD . Those enrolling in LCSD and CARES must provide their own device ( e . g . homeschool student transferring into LCSD must provide own device ).
• Parents and students must sign the LCSD Internet / Computer Usage Policy prior to issuance of the device .
• NOTE : Some elective courses and opportunities may not be offered to CARES distance learning students . For example , extracurricular activities such as athletics and activities will not be available to CARES distance learning students .
IMPORTANT WiFi REQUIREMENTS : Online / digital learning will be the primary method of working towards competency in a grade level and / or content area . Because CARES will not be delivered through paper packets , students must have access to adequate internet service . Families must have high-speed WiFi access available in their homes that will allow all students in the household to work online simultaneously .
• A reliable , high-speed Internet connection should be at least DSL ( Digital Subscriber Line ) with minimum speeds of 3 to 8 Mbps .
• The Federal Communications Commission ’ s ( FCC ) Household Broadband Guide provides recommended service for basic , medium , and advanced use . » Based on the FCC guidelines , you will need basic service ( 3 to 8 Mbps ) for one child participating in virtual learn-ing activities ,
» Medium service ( 12 to 25 Mbps ) for two or three children , and
» Advanced service ( 25 Mbps or higher ) for four or more children .
DISCLAIMER : If at any point , the school or district determines that distance learning is not the most effective learning approach for a student due to lack of attendance , participation , or academic growth , a conference will be held with the parent and principal to determine a potential change of delivery scenario .
As indicated above , the district has selected two learning management platforms for online learning :
• Google Classroom for students in grades K-4 , which is provided through the LCSD ’ s Google Accounts
• Canvas for students in grades 5-12 , which is accessible through the Clever portal
• Technology platforms enable teachers and students to communicate securely .
LCSD is also using a variety of tools to support digital learning .
LCSD will continue to offer teachers opportunities for professional development and resources that support the diverse needs of our learning community .
APPLICATION PROCESS : The CARES application on the LCSD website must be submitted to the school office by noon on Wednesday , September 30 in order for the district to plan . If your application is not received by this date , your child will be expected to continue attending school on campus .
TRANSITIONS FOR ENHANCED TRADITIONAL STUDENTS
If schools must achieve social distancing guidelines to reduce the number of students in the schools or close schools / district as determined by state and local health officials and / or the Governor ’ s Executive Order , we will move from ENHANCED TRADITIONAL to the SCHOOL2HOME Distance Learning scenario .
