Metallica’ s foundation expands vocational skills programme to London to support disadvantaged youth
All Within My Hands( AWMH), the non-profit, philanthropic organisation created by the members and management of Metallica, has partnered with Capital City College( CCC) to launch its Metallica Scholars Initiative( MSI) in London, pledging £ 186,000 to support over 1,000 students studying vocational courses for the 2026-2027 school year.
Starting this September, the programme will support over 1,000 young Londoners studying vocational courses at CCC. These Metallica Scholars will gain the technical, professional and personal skills needed to begin careers across a range of industries, including construction, engineering, healthcare, digital technologies, and hospitality.
The scholars will receive personalised mentoring, financial assistance for equipment and travel to college, enhanced work experience opportunities, and additional short courses to boost their employability and skills. The funding will also complement the London Growth Plan by helping more Londoners gain the skills needed for work.

Etihad airways unveils new destinations, expanding footprint across the globe
Etihad Airways has announced a major expansion of its global network, strengthening Abu Dhabi’ s position as a key gateway linking Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The airline will add five new destinations in mainland China, including Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Shenzhen, alongside 28 additional weekly flights, bringing its China network to 35 weekly services across six cities. The expansion is supported by Etihad’ s joint venture with China Eastern Airlines and is designed to boost trade, tourism and cargo connectivity between the UAE and one of the world’ s most important economic corridors.
Building on this growth, Etihad has also unveiled six new African destinations: Accra, Asmara, Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, Harare and Lagos. The new routes strengthen links between high-growth African markets and Asia, creating a more efficient corridor for passengers and freight via Abu Dhabi. Together, the China and Africa expansions reflect Etihad’ s strategy to connect rapidly growing economies, support trade and investment flows, and drive long-term economic growth across both regions.

NIC 2026 Awards Night: winners announced

The winners of the National Innovation Challenge( NIC) were announced at an awards ceremony at the Institution of Engineering and Technology in London on 25 June, hosted by BBC presenter and STEM ambassador Konnie Huq.
Led by Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge Colleges( HRUC) in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Industrial Liaison Program and sponsored by Amazon, this year’ s challenge invited students from across the UK to develop innovative ideas focused on Sustainability and AI. Judges praised the high standard of entries.

City Lit’ s Mental Wealth Festival
LCCI is delighted to support City Lit ' s 12th annual Mental Wealth Festival, taking place from 7-10 October in Central London. The festival features inspiring talks, taster sessions, performances and conversations exploring mental wellbeing, hosted by London’ s largest adult education college.

Yaseen Akhtar, Managing Director of the West London Institute of Technology, said the challenge encourages young people to develop solutions with real-world impact, while HRUC CEO Keith Smith congratulated finalists for sharing their vision of a more sustainable future.
The winners will embark on a once in a lifetime trip to MIT later this year. In the schools category, St Bede’ s Catholic High School won with DuoPod, a project supporting people with diabetes. Uxbridge College won the colleges category with Road-IQ, a renewable energy smart road hump.
