Timing is everything. Mayor of London Sir Sadiq
Khan was the guest speaker at LCCI’ s summer reception at Westminster on the day his elevation to the House of Lords was announced. He features on our front cover flanked by LCCI chair Julia Onslow-Cole and chief executive Karim Fatehi OBE. The event bought together London’ s diverse and dynamic business community and featured the official launch of LCCI’ s SME London Business Awards 2027.
Mayor Khan’ s draft London plan( p 14) was published in July and is a blueprint for“ building a fairer, greener and more prosperous London for everyone over the next two decades.”
Modern governance
LCCI president Michael Mainelli makes two appearances in this issue. On page 8 he tackles the subject of student debt while on page 16 we publish his letter to LCCI members in advance of the September AGM on the need for“ modern governance for a modern chamber”.
Sport and business
We reference six sports-related topics this issue. Hard on the heels of the hugely successful European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, it has been announced( p 20) that London is bidding for the global version of the event to be held in 2029.
This year ' s Wimbledon tennis tournament may be a distant memory but the business impact lingers on( p 21). LCCI members have been treated to glorious weather – and exciting cricket and horse racing over the summer at the Oval( p 20) and Lingfield Park respectively( p 13). If swimming is the thing, check out Sea Lanes in Canary Wharf which opened in June and continue the long tradition of encouraging Londoners into the water( p 11). The annual Great City Race again attracted a bumper crop of participants with LCCI putting up a particularly good show( p 69).
Litigation
The Big Read this issue( p 60) is about asset tracing and why getting in early has become essential for litigation strategy. Speed is also a major factor. As Martin Dubbey’ s article explains:“ when intelligence is integrated early, legal teams can make better decisions about whether to sue, where to sue, and how to preserve a realistic path to recovery.”
On a lighter note, our series on statues in Leicester Square continues with Bugs Bunny( p 20), the first( and, so far, only) cartoon character to celebrate the film industry in the series.
