Rancho Bolsa Dive Club Gets the Lead Out

For almost two years , the Rancho Bolsa Dive Club has ventured beyond the surface – gathering at Emerald Bay each Sunday to scour the depths of the ocean bed for lead fishing sinkers and other discarded junk , sometimes found resting at the bottom of the ocean for decades or longer .
The diving group started small after two Emerald Bay locals noticed the amount of discarded lead sinkers and began pulling them out of the ocean . Through word of mouth , the dive club has swelled to around 25 regular divers who meet at 11 a . m . every Sunday at the water ’ s edge .
“ The group stays in the water for around 45 minutes , and then it ’ s time for lunch and hang time ,” Rancho Bolsa Dive Club member Gary Cogorno said . “ Needless to say , if the weather ’ s good , you don ’ t want to leave .”
Bill Steer , who has been part of the club for about a year and a half , added there is always food , drinks and barbecue to look forward to after the dive .

Dedicated members can even qualify for a Rancho Bolsa Dive Club sweatshirt , on which divers sew on patches - scout style - according to how many pieces of lead they ’ ve collected from the bottom of the ocean .
Despite having cleared much of Emerald Bay ’ s ocean floor of lead , the Rancho Bolsa divers still emerge with at least 10 or 15 pieces in hand .

Pageant of the Monsters Returns to Festival of Arts
‘ Maze of the Minotaur ’ is This Year ’ s Haunted House Theme

This fall , the Pageant of the Masters ’ creative team of artists and technicians have reunited to conjure up the acclaimed Halloween haunted house as part of the Pageant of the Masters 90th Anniversary celebration . This year ’ s theme is the “ Maze of the Minotaur .”
Only resurrected every 5 years , this family-friendly Halloween event will take place at the Festival of Arts on Oct . 27 , 28 , 29 and 31 .
Guests will be directed through the amphitheater , Pageant workshops , and stage , which have been transformed into a series of spooky artistically presented vignettes inspired by ancient Greek mythology and the legend of the Minotaur .
Those daring enough to enter the Pageant of the Monsters haunted house will find themselves descending into the chilling depths of the labyrinth where the monstrous Minotaur , a nightmarish fusion of man and bull , has been imprisoned . Guests will join the valiant
