important art colonies of the US and the world .”
The Harlem Renaissance is considered a golden age in African American culture , manifesting in literature , music , stage performance , and art . The era is widely known in pop culture for its nightclubs and music : Duke Ellington , Cab Calloway of the Cotton Club , and Bessie Smith , to name a few . Lesser known to many are the painters and sculptors associated with the movement . The Pageant of the Masters hopes to shine a light on sculptors Meta Warrick Fuller and Augusta Savage , and painters Archibald Motley and Aaron Douglas .
Kicking off act two , audiences will see the work of these artists come to life on stage , including the signature 16-foot sculpture “ Lift Every Voice and Sing ” by Harlem Renaissance artist , activist , and educator Augusta Savage ; as well as , “ Song of the Towers ,” which is part of a four-mural collection series by Aaron Douglas . Douglas felt that jazz was a significant contribution of African American culture to the world . Meta V . W . Fuller ’ s bronze statue “ Emancipation ” and Archibald Motley ’ s extraordinary painting “ Holy Rollers ” will also be highlighted during the Harlem Renaissance art colony portion of the show .
“ All four of these works of art are new to our stage . I especially admire Aaron Douglas ’ style ; his colorful silhouette paintings and murals depicting Black history ,” added Challis Davy . “ I have selected uplifting musical pieces to complement the four tableaux . Jazz , spirituals , and gospel will be represented , along with a song that ’ s considered an anthem - ’ Lift Every Voice and Sing !’”
Presented under Laguna Beach ’ s starry-summer night sky , the 2023 Pageant of the Masters will also feature live , original music and narration , dazzling theatrical illusions , and some surprises , all presented in the 2,600- seat amphitheater of the Irvine Bowl .
The art colony established in Laguna Beach in the early 20th century was the primary inspiration for the 2023 theme . “ We ’ re excited about the theme , ‘ Art Colony ,’ because Laguna Beach was really put on the map as such more than 100 years ago ,” Challis Davy said . “ We don ’ t acknowledge our local art colony status until the finale of the show , and along the way , we will show other art colonies where artists offered support and inspired one another .” The Pageant of the Masters is celebrating its 90th anniversary this summer with the production , Art Colony : In the Company of Artists , with performances nightly from July 7 to Sept . 1 . Advance tickets are now on sale starting at $ 35 per person . More information about the Pageant of the Masters and Festival of Arts can be found by following the Festival at @ FestivalPageant and by visiting www . foapom . com .

Amid the sages , the toyons and lemonade berries are the rare Cneoridium dumosum , or spice bush , which bears miniature oranges . It is the only member of the citrus family native to Orange County . I find that little fact ironic and fascinating , but I pointed it out to a hiker up on the Valido trail recently and got a “ Hmm .” I think he was more interested in how many steps were being tallied in his Apple watch . We weren ’ t counting steps in those days . We were deep breathing the scents , looking for wood rat nests ( Fred ’ s favorite animal ), and loving these richly carpeted and still preserved natural hillsides .
But it wasn ’ t peaceful , as I told the doctor , it was tumultuous . From the first week I started working for Fred we had planning commission and board of supervisors meetings in Santa Ana — years of them . How many afternoons sitting in those hard seats waiting for our three-minute opportunity to convince commissioners and board members from flat urban Orange County that preserving these remote hillsides was important .
There was organizing with the South Laguna Civic Association , community meetings , garage sales to raise funds for legal assistance , and on the professional side , mapping , analyzing development proposals , writing letters and producing an actual plan for South Laguna that saved most of the hillsides in open space . It was the first natural resourcebased land use plan for Orange County . If not for these efforts , there would have been roads up the mountains from First Avenue ( now Eagle Rock Way ) and Third Avenue , and the hillsides would have been graded for mobile homes , condominiums and houses . There was no period of time without controversy or a misguided development proposal . There were also opportunities to create more beauty and park space ( South Laguna Village Green ), and those required politicking too . More hard seat sitting , more persuasion , more drawings , more community creativity . There is still no time without controversy or opportunity to make the community better .
That ’ s the thing . We have a treasure here . That doesn ’ t mean we just declare that we ’ re lucky and then open the box and spend what has been so carefully put there by nature and our predecessors . We are now the treasurers , the guardians . That ’ s our job now , to sit in the hard seats , to be inspiring and appreciative , not only keeping the decisions from going astray but putting our creativity and love into our treasure , our town , to nourish it and make it even more beautiful . Thanks , Doc .

Join historian Alison Rose Jefferson for a presentation where she will share stories about how African Americans from the 1900s to 1960s created recreational and relaxation spaces at Southern California beaches and other places . In the process , African Americans could form communities and create business projects at these sites . These stories are drawn from her recent book , Living the California Dream : African American Leisure Sites during the Jim Crow Era and other work . She will also share how some of these stories are being used in contemporary public history remembrance and public policy actions . The presentation starts at 1 pm .
