“ We are a co-op of little shops-ina-shop ,” commented business owner Schenk . “ We ’ ve invited artists and makers to rent space to show their collections of handmade or hard-to-find goods . I wanted to bring many genres under one roof , each with their own look .”
The sunny , 1,600-square-foot shop showcases ceramic artists , furniture importers , vintage clothing finds , men ’ s , women ’ s , and unisex clothing lines , homewares , handmade accessories , natural apothecary , flowers , plants and jewelry .
Vertigo founders Chris Oswalt and Martin Ulrich closed shop but now offer goods online . However , a wall area at the Bluebird Mercantile still provides a sampling of items representative of their playful but practical design aesthetic .
“ We are so excited to bring talented people and unique finds to our community and to have it all under one roof ,” said Schenk . “( Vertigo owners ) Chris and Martin gave us big shoes to fill , but we intend to do our best to give excellent customer service and to make everyone feel welcome .”
A serial retailer and seasoned seller of attention-grabbing goods , Schenk exhibits Super Ready ’ s line of upcycled Army garments repurposed into modern silhouettes and classic vintage Levi ’ s 501 jeans ; Mary McDonald ’ s Double M Pottery ; macrame artist Jim Olarte ’ s organic , oversize creations ; MexDirect , which possesses a coveted export license to deliver custom-made artisanal wares to the U . S .; bandana pants and scarves from Artisan Collage out of Joshua Tree ; Towne , a popular Palm Springs men ’ s clothing store that offers stylish MacKeene fashions ; stunning vintage garments curated by Rachiel Macallistaire ; Found Rentals , high-end furniture for sale or rental for home stagings or parties .
Schenk creates a cohesive shopping experience with an assembly of host gifts and garden and home goods not seen in other stores : Moroccan candles , candlesticks from Kenya , Portuguese pottery , baskets , tea towels , and more .
Schenk is known as the energy behind clothing stores Little Bohemian , Bohemian Kids and trucker hat label NBRHD . After a break from retail , she threw herself into pottery for five years before diving back into the retail game with Bluebird Mercantile . Her power team includes co-managers Nika Shalala ( who also operates Neat by Nika , her organizing side hustle ) and Carol Gonzalez , whose experience as a manager for Vertigo adds a dash of secret success sauce and a handy bridge between the former store and the new emporium .
Store hours are 10 a . m . to 6 p . m . Monday through Saturday and 11 a . m . to 5 p . m . Sunday . A website is in the works , but the shop can be followed on Instagram at @ bluebirdmercantileLB . genotoxicity ( cancer-causing ). Many peer-reviewed papers have been published generally supporting and / or defending the determination .
Reed : “ Being against Roundup is like being on a crusade . You feel a solidarity with like-minded warriors . … But like the crusaders of old , who made war on those of another religion , history now views crusader glory in a rather different light .”
Our response : Comparing the thousands of residents in Laguna Beach who oppose using Roundup in public areas to medieval crusaders is demeaning and insulting .
Reed : “ The ESC boasts of its unanimous decision to ban Roundup . This looks to me more like a classic case of groupthink .”
Our response : Once again , Dr . Reed is confused . The ESC did NOT vote to ban Roundup . It voted for the City Council to consider options to minimize its use , including seeking a Coastal Commission amendment to endorse an Integrated Pest Management policy like Malibu and Irvine , requiring people to use nontoxic alternatives before using synthetic herbicides . The ESC also noted that nothing prevents the city itself from prohibiting city agencies from using Roundup , as Malibu has done .
Reed : “ Laguna ’ s city parks are persistently weedy with invasive plants and not nearly as beautiful as they could be . Roundup would help a lot .” Our response : We hope the city does not heed Dr . Reed ’ s advice .
Reed : “ I do not believe Roundup has significant toxicity when used in diluted form . It may be Monsanto ’ s greatest invention .”
Our response : We rely on peer-reviewed science to understand Roundup ’ s risks ( unlike the EPA ), which raises serious questions about its safety . If there are alternatives , which may cost more , the city should

Mayor Pro Tem Sue Kempf and Laguna Health Club owner Doug Schulein recently joined Laguna Beach Community Clinic ’ s CEO and Chief Medical Director Jorge Rubal for a fun and informative look at personal fitness in episode six of clinic ’ s LiveWell video outreach .
The video opens with an overview of pre and post-workout nutrition by the clinic ’ s registered dietitian nutritionist , Ana Salazar , where the public can learn how best to fuel up for optimal workout performance and what to eat afterward to support muscle repair and growth .
Largely filmed onsite at the Laguna Health Club , “ I always tell patients to aim for 150 minutes of exercise each week , emphasizing strength training because we know it helps build muscle , increase bone density , and improve overall strength ,” Rubal said . “ We want to get the message out there in a way that ’ s friendly and encouraging , that ’ s why I ’ m so grateful for Sue and Doug , they underscore the community aspect of fitness .”
Schulein , who has owned the Laguna Health Club for the past 18 years , remarks in the video , “ I love to help people ; that ’ s why I ’ m in this business . It really is a gym for everyone ; it ’ s designed for all ages , from the 14-year-old athlete to the 75-year-old recovering from an injury ”.
Kempf , a long-time member of the Laguna Health Club , visits three times a week , focusing on a half hour of stretching and a half hour of strength training . When asked the biggest benefit she experiences from her time working out , she replied , “ General happiness .”
That ’ s what Schulein hopes everyone will experience , “ If it ’ s fun , people will come back , and if they come back , they ’ re going to get healthy .”

This is where we agree with Dr . Reed . He concludes by suggesting to the City Council “ to find other solutions that allay the fears of those who think Roundup is a deadly toxin , perhaps by using hand crews to clear fuel modification zones where people go frequently .”
Ramin is a resident of Laguna Beach and a South Laguna Civic Association board member . The views expressed in this column are made in his personal capacity as a concerned resident , along with Jinger Wallace , Charlotte Masarik , Cindy Love , Ted Reckas , Gayle Waite , and Judie Mancuso , vice chair of the Environmental Sustainability Committee .
