multiple outdoor spaces , including a gymnasium , basketball courts , recreation field , playground structures and picnic areas . An array of long-term use concepts includes a community pool , cultural arts center , recreation facilities , and other City civic and administrative uses .
“ This property will greatly benefit residents as we now have the space to accommodate added programs and services ,” Whalen said . “ We look forward to hearing ideas from our community on the possible uses for this location . With the acquisition of this property , the time is right for the City to develop a master plan for all Cityowned properties , and we will work to create a vision for community-serving facilities that everyone can enjoy .”
In August , the City Council adopted a financing plan that includes appropriating $ 23.5 million for the purchase of the property , minor tenant improvements , and maintenance in the first
year using $ 4 million from the Future City Facilities account , $ 2 million from American Rescue Plan Act ( ARPA ) funds , $ 3 million from the General Fund mid-year savings , $ 2 million from Vehicle Replacement Fund midyear savings and $ 1 million Insurance Fund mid-year savings .
Laguna Beach secured a direct loan via a private placement sale for $ 11.5 million .
In 2021 , the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange County reached Laguna Beach officials to determine if the City was interested in acquiring the former school property . The acquisition took time because the diocese had to get approval from Rome to confirm the sale .
The City Council will discuss immediate , interim uses for the property during its Jan . 24 meeting and a process for master planning for long-term uses at the Jan . 28 annual planning session .
I know an off-season Starbucks at Sawdust may not fit your charming village character , which we LOVE , so we would totally be open to a non-Starbucks drive-through too . Maybe something with breakfast burritos ? Don ’ t you ever crave a doughnut on the way out of town ? Maybe cold-pressed juices ? Actually , Starbucks is fine .
The second and final item is a bigger deal , but we know you love an eco-friendly choice : A chairlift over the canyon .
In the past , I ’ ve suggested a Hogwarts Express-style train to alleviate traffic on Laguna Canyon Road , which would be great , but a chairlift ( like a ski lift ) is a real thing . It would go from the base of the Aliso and Woods Canyon trail up to the Top of the World soccer field .
Upon arrival , kids could toss their backpacks onto the grass and
run or tumble off the lift ( kids love to tumble !) These kids would all become really fantastic gymnasts , and after traveling a few miles in the cool , morning air , they ’ d be nice and awake for a productive day at school !
This ingenious chairlift would run continuously from whenever surfers start surfing to whenever water polo practice ends , like midnight ?
So , think about it , would you please ? Have your city council talk to our city council ; they ’ ll know what to do , right ?
Whatever you decide , we ’ re just happy to live next door to the best beach city in the world ! Thank you for occasionally including us and educating some of our children .
Now , what would you like from us ? Happy New Year - see you in 2023 !

Finally our marine safety dept will guard the beaches in South Laguna , and public works will assess needed improvements and day-to-day maintenance of trails and stairways from Coast Highway because now the City owns the beaches and access ways to the beaches of South Laguna . I like Aliso Beach and Canyon because it has the only cafe on the sand , the Lost Pier Cafe . Fourteen hundred feet east , beyond Aliso Beaches handy parking lot , is the Ranch , complete with its deck seating and inside restaurant
with exceptional views of Aliso Canyon , the nine-hole golf course and hotel , which has a great pool and jacuzzi . The Ranch even has a store . If you are at Aliso Beach and look southeast , up on top of the hill , 400 feet high , sits the Richard Halliburton house built in the late 1930 ’ s . The three-bedroom house was designed and built by William Alexander . A friend and lover , secretary and ghostwriter Paul Mooney shared the house with Halliburton , who traveled the earth in the 1920 ’ s and 1930 ’ s writing books , articles and giving lectures about his world travels . I like West St ., the international LGBTQ-friendly
beach which is adjacent to Camels Point Drive public access way . It has a lifeguard tower in the summer , volleyball courts , restrooms and some of Laguna ’ s largest expanses of sand . The surf along these beaches is considered a shore break that crashed down and caused me to get a dislocated arm years ago . Be careful . Thousand Steps is my third favorite beach . Its isolation is what I think people like , but the lack of parking and popularity is a nightmare for nearby residents . It is sometimes called Ninth Street Beach , and the next beach south is famous for summer sunbathing .
