Lazette Special Issue: Living Not Surviving May 2021 | Page 5

To the Lasallian Community :
In the past year , we encountered challenges that none of us could have anticipated . We were forced to adapt to an entirely new form of schooling where masks became an everyday part of life . We learned to be apart from those who meant the most to us , and some of us lost our loved ones to an inescapable , invisible force . Every experience we had was overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic , which threatened our very way of life .
However , there were also silver linings which shone through the difficulties we faced . La Salle Green Hills ( LSGH ) continued to adapt and grow , opening its doors to a wider community . Businesses found ways to survive and thrive in a new environment . Hope was renewed as vaccines began to be distributed . People banded together to help one another despite significant pushback from powerful - and dangerous - forces , which ought to have been helping us in the first place . Our very own students in LSGH rose to the occasion , spearheading projects that provided aid to those in need .
We at The Lazette had our own share of adjustments to make , as each of us learned to work with new tools and new people in an unfamiliar setup . However , like everyone else , we persevered . In celebration - and lamentation - of the highs and lows of the past year , we present LIVING NOT SURVIVING : a compilation of articles and graphics by students of LSGH . This digital magazine , a product of months of hard work , is a collection of stories about the struggles people faced as they made their way through the pandemic , finding new ways to live and thrive in hard times .
Thank you to everyone who helped make this magazine possible : the writers , who took the time to write their articles without any material compensation or reward ; the artists , who despite limited manpower brought the articles to life with their work ; the editors , who stayed strong throughout countless assignments and revisions ; Yannis De Jesus , who was my indispensable partner and micromanager for this magazine and the entire school year ; Sir Bryan Alonzo , who guided us in these difficult times and constantly pushed us to be better ; and the LSGH administration , which continues to support The Lazette in our commitment to keeping the Lasallian community informed by writing what is right .
Being Editor-in-Chief of the Lazette was the culmination of my journey in high school campus journalism , which began in Grade 8 as a contributor to the publication of my school at the time . This leadership position was a learning experience , with a level of responsibility I would not have had anywhere else . I am extremely grateful for having had this opportunity .
