about the Cover

In keeping with President Jacqueline Simms-Petredis ’ themes of community and diversity , we are honoring an important anniversary this year on the cover of this issue , the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier to become the first African-American player in Major League Baseball . We also will be highlighting this milestone at our Bench Bar Conference in October , where our featured luncheon speaker Fred Hearns , the curator of Black history at the Tampa Bay History Museum , will discuss Robinson ’ s connection to Tampa , the NAACP and how baseball players were involved in the civil rights movement . To learn more about Jackie Robinson and his important role in the civil rights movement , visit https :// www . mlb . com / news / jackie-robinson-civil-rights-activist .
