Entitled . Lazy . Apathetic . These are some of the words that I frequently hear used to describe members of the youngest generation in the workforce . These are all negative stereotypes that in some cases are not accurate . This article will introduce you to Generation Z and highlight the benefits of hiring from this new group of potential employees .

In general , scholars identify common characteristics or traits held by members of these generations . Keeping in mind that not every individual possesses these characteristics , it is important to point out how the youngest generation is different than those that came before .
To begin , both Generations Z and Y are typically labeled as lazy . However , both grew up in an era where every home had a computer and a smart phone . The days of walking across a college campus to a library , using a card catalog , and flipping through a book to get information is over . Nowadays , a person can have information at his or her fingertips within seconds . Therefore , I challenge the notion
that these generations are lazy . They simply know how to find information faster and smarter because they were raised with a technological savvy . This is good news for law firms because these individuals may be able to navigate online legal databases in a more efficient and creative manner than older generations who were not trained on computer research .
Second , Generation Z is set to be the most diverse generation to date . With diversity comes an ability to think of innovative solutions to problems . Hiring someone from this generation may be beneficial as they likely may be able to view legal issues and problems with a new lens . As a result of the times they grew up in , they view the world differently . Therefore , they can provide a different perspective if you let them .
Third , the younger generations care more about social issues than previous generations . If you look around the media today , you will see representatives from Generation Z leading the way with regard to environmental issues and many social causes . This bodes well for the legal profession as pro bono work and giving back to the community are both hallmarks of our discipline .
Fourth , they may be able to help you learn new technology and social media marketing . When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020 , many people were scrambling to learn software like Zoom . This generation grew up video chatting and adapted rather quickly to the technology that we have all since become reliant on . Also , they may be aware of new avenues for you to market your services since they know more about social media than any other generation .
In sum , do not be fearful of hiring someone from a younger generation . Be patient and be aware that not every generation communicates in the same manner . However , if you give them tasks that allow them to be creative , you may find an efficient and creative employee . n
