Snoop Dogg is taking a stand against the new History channel series “Roots.” The rapper expressed his dislike and
spoke out against the four-part miniseries in a post on Instagram where he asked fans to boycott the revival of the
classic show that originally aired in 1977.
“How the f*** they gonna put ‘Roots’ on on Memorial Day? They gonna just keep beating that s*** in our heads of
how they did us, huh?” Snoops says in the video. “I don’t understand America. They just want to keep showing the
abuse that we took hundreds and hundreds of years ago. But, guess what? We taking the same abuse.”
The remake is based on the novel by Alex Haley and tells the story of Kunta Kinte, a Gambian child captured by white
men and brought to North America as a slave.
“When you all going to make a motherf***ing series about the success black folks is having? The only success we have
is ‘Roots’ and ’12 Years a Slave’ and s*** like that, huh?” He added. “F*** ya’ll. I ain’t watching that s***. F*** them
television shows. Let’s create our own s*** based on today, how we live, and how we inspire people today.”
Actor LeVar Burton, who starred in the original miniseries as the lead, Kunta Kinte, and is co-executive producer of
the revival, told People that he hopes this can start a national discussion.
“I’m hoping we can create a conversation about race that is absent fear, anger, guilt and shame, and just deal honestly
with what continues to hold us back,” Burton said. “This is an opportunity.”
The next episode of “Roots” airs Tuesday, May 31 through Thursday, June 2 at 9PM ET on History.
