to my Angels, hoping, and yet knowing intuitively
that they were God?s helpers and would help my
?unbeknownst love? to find his way to me. it, as was Bernie, because the next letter he mailed
to me stated that ?I am happy that you were glad to
receive my letter.?
A couple of nights later, I mentioned to my Mom
and Dad that if they wanted to go bowling, I?d be
home to babysit my younger four siblings if they
wanted. Well, after an uneventful evening, I put
everyone to bed, when suddenly I heard a knock on
the door. I got up and peeked out the kitchen
window to see who was there. To my surprise, it
was a guy that my family knew, who also worked in
the shoe store. Another man in a Navy outfit was
with him. I thought to myself, well, I
better not let them in without my
parents gone, but then thought, ?Well,
what the heck, let?s see what they
want.? We corresponded for months. In April, when his
ship docked in Ft. Lauderdale, Bernie arranged that
I would ride down with his parents to get a tour of
the ship he was on. Then in May, he managed to get
leave to celebrate my birthday with me.
Later that month, in one of his letters to me, he
asked, ?how long should people know each other
before they start talking about getting married?? I
was so excited that I considered it my engagement
letter!
On August 22, 1958, we got married. I felt
as if my Angels were with me as I walked
down the aisle. And here we are today,
celebrating our 61st wedding anniversary!
It has not been all hearts and flowers, but
Bernie has been so supportive of my
adventures with post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD) and Agoraphobia. He has
and continues to be especially supportive
of my active coaching career. I feel so
blessed to have Bernie as my life?s
partner.
Everett, who worked at the Shoe Store
said, ?Hi Maurie, we were just at the
pizza place and thought we?d drop by
and say hello. Have you ever met my
friend, Bernie? He?s home on leave
from the ship.? I replied to Bernie, ?Oh,
I have seen him around the school.
Well, come on in.?
As we sat around talking about high
school, all the kids we knew and of course music,
we discovered that Bernie and I graduated in the
same class. Not only that but Bernie and I were not
only born 15 miles from each other, but I was also
one month older than Bernie and both our families
moved to Florida the same year! We had so much
in common!
In the long run, my mother was so right!
Love did come knocking at my door with the help
of my angels. You see, not only Bernie and I are
life-long partners, but I also came to realize that I
am working in partnership with my loving Angels!
Now, Everett kept trying to sit close to me and I
would intentionally get up and get us Coca Colas or
put another record on the turntable. Everett was a
nice enough guy, but I just wasn?t interested in him.
Still, the evening was fun, and I really enjoyed it.
I didn?t think much about it until the next evening
when Bernie dropped by before going into Palm
Beach to pick up his Dad from work. He asked me if
I wanted to go with him. I said, ?Sure!? We listened
to music on the car radio, chatting and laughing all
the way to Palm Beach. Well, I guess something
clicked, because we were together every day for
the rest of his leave!
A few weeks later, I received a letter from Bernie
telling me what a great time he had during his
leave. I was surprised to notice that the letter had
the wrong address on it and yet it was still
delivered to the correct mailbox! My very first
thought was somehow, both of our Angels made
sure his letter got to me. I was so grateful that I got
