Kentucky Colonel’ s Kelly Burton, a past president of the Southeastern Kentucky Chapter of Honorable Order, awarded Reed Sheppard with the title of Honorable Kentucky Colonel before Shortt listed the teams between 1924 to 2024.
Coming up on the end of the ceremony, the Sheppard family returned to the stage to receive a memento representing the ceremony. Each of the family members said a few words, beginning with Stacey.
“ I want to thank you all for coming out today. Coach Bowling and Coach Hughlet, I appreciate everything that you poured into me as a little-bitty
thing growing up,” she stated.
Madison— who played for Campbellsville University— spoke after her mother, stating,“ It’ s been really cool, as I have grown up and moved away from Laurel County, to always come back home and be met with the same love and respect as I have been met with my whole life. We are very grateful as a family to have our name on this wall.”
Reed followed suit, telling the audience,“ This was a lot of fun for me and my family. I thank all you guys for coming out today and being a part of this. I thank all my teachers, my teammates, and my coaches for sticking with me throughout my whole middle school and high school career, and still staying in touch today. You guys mean the world to me. I appreciate it. I’ ve
always said I’ m just a little boy from London, Kentucky, and I will always say that.”
The final speaker of the family was Jeff.“ What’ s special about looking out at the crowd is it’ s the same crowd that’ s been to birthday parties, playmaker practices, middle school games, high school games, at the restaurants where we see you, at the Kentucky games this year, and probably at the NBA games in the future. So, that’ s what makes it special for us,” Jeff stated.
Once Shortt dismissed attendees, many of them lined up to receive autographs and / or photos. Guests were also welcome to view the newlypainted basketball courts, where the county’ s future greats can learn the game and maybe earn a spot of the new wall of fame.
