The local owners of this retro checkered space in the heart of historic downtown Santa Ana peeled back over 100 years of construction to uncover the original , neoclassical bones of the space in order to revitalize the historic centennial building , with every piece of furniture custom-designed and handmade from local designers . Inspired from their travels around the world , the eclectic food and cocktail menu is infused with flavors from New York City to Spain , Thailand to South America and pairing pop ups occur often . Each shaken cocktail is also inspired by a travel-worthy city around the globe , such as a recent Japanese vacation Takeover with cocktails named Kanichawa Barbie with haku , vodka , Pamplemouse , carpana bitter , lemon and vegan foam or the Taki Low-Ball with umebashu infused taki , Compass Box spice tree and Japanese plum wine bitters . Wanting to change behavior patterns around sunscreen use to prevent skin cancer and not just protect against its reoccurance , Dr . Steven Wang , Director of Dermatologic Oncology at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian , created a sunscreen product that people would actually put in their hair to protect their scalps from skin cancer before it happens .

Our longing for the return of a fresh baked bakery in Laguna Beach after Andree ’ s Patisserie — which has been a beloved neighborhood spot since the 1960s — closed has been quenched with the recent opening of The b8Kery , a sweet homage to ice hockey legend Teemu Selanne ’ s # 8 retired jersey . The airy shop in the alley next to Selanne Steak Tavern features a scrumptious display of Selanne executive pastry chef Rebekah Eastman ’ s childhood inspired pastries and breads and hot and cold coffees made with artisanal Caffe Luxxe of Southern California-famed coffee beans . Eastman ’ s strawberry , pumpkin and brown sugar “ Bang ” pies , an elevated pop tart with more filling than buttery crust that ’ s more of sugar blasted empanada , remind her of her childhood in Virginia , as well as her orange rolls , a take on the Pillsbury rolls of her youth “ that we had every Christmas morning .” Everything in the case , says Eastman , “ is somehow part of my childhood , the peanut butter brownies that were an experiment my older sister and I did , and my dad ’ s favorites , the donut muffins and oatmeal butterscotch cookies .” Stay tuned for more , she says .
