SURFRIDER MALIBU , MALIBU , CA
Since the 1950s , The Surfrider Malibu was the motel to hibernate at after a post-surf session — surfers from all over the world came to catch a wave at the legendary First Point break off of Surfrider Beach — or a show at next door ’ s Crazy Horse Saloon . The mecca of traditional long boarding and a World Surfing Reserve , Surfrider Beach is the setting for the newly renovated hotel , which looks out from its rooftop First Point Bar over the iconic 1938 pier .
Built in 1953 , the motel , which The New York Times called “ tonic for the soul ,” has been transformed into a chic , light-filled , design-forward space owned by California-born architect Matthew Goodwin , his Australian wife Emma
Crowther-Goodwin , and their entrepreneur friend Alessandro Zampedri . Natural materials line the property , including limestone , teak and white oak . Reclaimed wood floors and locally made ceramics fill the guest rooms , and a large communal lobby is full of coffee table books and framed art from locals . All 20 rooms , some with spa rain showers and four poster beds , have a balcony with a view of the beach . If you want to wander , a complimentary 1968 Land Rover will drive guests to other iconic surf spots like Leo Carrillo . If you just want to hang on the sand , the Surfrider Beach Club service will set up chairs , umbrellas and coolers . Can you say barefoot cool ? ( thesurfridermalibu . com )
