As the sun grows stronger throughout the day ( and particularly in the summer ), the one-inch thick limestone flooring absorbs the radiant heat from the sun . But , the home ’ s green ingenuity doesn ’ t stop there . As the sun goes down , the stone redistributes the heat throughout the house to help moderate the temperature . In essence , Jeannette has cracked the code to designing a mountain home that relies solely on nature to heat and cool it throughout the extreme , changing seasons .
ILLUMINATING THE INTERIOR When asked about the home ’ s highlights second to energy conservation , Jeannette refers to the unmistakable view that can be seen through the floor-toceiling bay windows within steps of entering the house . “ Looking at Mammoth and the Sierras I think was the most exciting ,” he says .
Among other stand-out features are Douglas Fir structural beams throughout the ceilings of the main room , which Jeannette calls an “ aesthetic nod to the mountains .” He regards the entire home as a “ casual living environment blending with nature .”
The primary bathroom is one of 10 bathrooms , and it ’ s one that ’ s worthy of praise . Above the tub sits a strategically-placed mitered window , surrounded by local indigenous stone . And while no one can deny the dreamy , spa-like aesthetic of the space , both design features are part of the home ’ s grand plan to save and recycle energy . “ The stone here has the same function as the [ limestone ] flooring ,” says Jeannette .
A WARM PLACE TO REST There ’ s plenty of room to relax and entertain throughout all three levels of this open floor plan , from the “ Great Room ” in the main living area to the third floor ’ s designated lookout space . Jeannette ’ s voice perks up when asked about the lower level of the home ; a recreational space that he calls the “ Daylight Basement ,” equipped with its own private bathroom , mudroom , wet bar , wine room and pool table .
It seems fitting that a home welcoming “ great exposure from the sun ” also allows so much room for joy . Where there ’ s light , there ’ s life . If that is indeed the case , then this Mammoth Lakes masterpiece not only deserves the sunlight ; it deserves the spotlight .
