here have been few industries unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic , and even fewer have been hit as hard as the tourism sector ; most experts don ’ t expect a full recovery until 2024 or later . But in the meantime , hotels and resorts in Southern California have used the down time to charge forward with major renovations , many of which pay tribute to history and offer innovative design updates that honor the past while welcoming the future .
Architects and interior designers are using sustainable materials in the renovations , such as the iconoic Surfrider Malibu , which has been transformed into a chic , lightfilled , design-forward space lined with natural materials ; the building housing Hotel Per La , whose Neoclassical style , such as its Doric columns , ornate golden and blue ceiling , and marble floors , have been incorporated alongside a new playful and approachable design reflective of the city ’ s diversity of cultures and characters ; or Laguna Beach ’ s SCP Seven4One , where Horst Architects used century-old reclaimed wood from buildings demolished in east LA . In this issue , we explore the design innovations travellers can expect in these newly revealed spaces .
Sustainability is a theme across the pages that follow , from low maintenance gardens that use little water , to objects of war recycled into artistic objects of peace , to electric cars : The pandemic may have also temporarily slowed the development and introduction of new electric vehicles , but automakers worldwide have made up for lost time by launching a slew of new models over the next few years .
Also in this issue , you ’ ll find images from the American Institute of Archiecture / Orange County ’ s first photography awards and stories about innovative design , including a feature showcasing a modernized mountain house in Mammoth Lakes designed by Newport Beach architect Brion Jeannette that is beaming with innovative ways to conserve and repurpose energy by using the sun as its source of light , power and protection .
