For many families that are struggling with guardianship issues, a Guardian Ad Litem can better help Children communicate with an oftennon-comital court system
As anyone that has ever been through a sticky divorce involving the custody of minor children knows, fighting for custody of an abused child can be a challenging journey. Today’ s family court judiciary system is often afraid of making one decision or another and therefore allow unfit parents to retain their parental rights. A to the children, they have very little rights or say in the matter and even teenage victims are denied the opportunity to speak on their behalf.
The Guardian ad Litem program can help,“ IF” the court allows.
What is a Guardian ad Litem( GAL)? A Guardian ad Litem( GAL) is a volunteer who has made a decision to speak up for a child in the dependency system, commonly referred to as the foster care system. Each year, there are more than 3,000 abused, abandoned and neglected children in Hillsborough County who are the subject of court proceedings. Their voices often go unheard and their best interests are overlooked because there is no one to take their case. The GAL compiles the information received through various sources, and advocates for the child by assuring that his or her wishes are heard and that the best interests of the child are presented to the Court and affiliated agencies. The GAL is a vital part of the court process for any child involved in the child welfare system.
What does it take to be a GAL and make a difference in the life of a child? Our Program will prepare you and teach you everything you need to know! We provide you with GAL certification training. This is a three-part training including: an independent study, class time and work, and handson training with an experienced Guardian ad Litem. The independent study portion of the training combines an on-line segment and readings.
The classroom portion is only 15 hours in over five evenings or two Saturdays. The completion of the 15 hour training and the independent study portion of the training will then provisionally certify you so that you may be assigned a case and begin the field component of the training under the guidance of an experienced GAL volunteer, called a mentor. With the help of your mentor, you will learn and experience what it is like to be a GAL.
