This past summer , Jennifer Lopez unveiled a new billboard in New York City ’ s Times Square to promote BGC ’ s new message . The billboard features a simple message : “ Be Extraordinary ,” and shows a picture of a Lopez as a little girl with adorable pigtail braids from her days at the BGC .
Lopez is one of 25 notable alumni promoting the positive effects of the Boys & Girls Clubs on youths who spend time there . In the “ Alumni ” section of the Be Great America website , you can find out which clubs celebrities including Martin Sheen , Kerry Washington , Denzel Washington , Usher , Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Mario Lopez attended while growing up . According to a release , all 25 alumni joined the BE GREAT campaign to “ increase public awareness about the serious issues facing today ’ s young people , and send a call-toaction , urging every American to help young people BE GREAT .”
The Boys & Girls Clubs have been encouraging America ’ s youth to “ be great ” since 1860 , but with this new campaign , they hope to further promote how youth advocacy programs can help children and teens achieve success beyond what they ever thought possible . In 2007 , a Harris survey found that 57 percent of Boys & Girls Club participants reported that “ The Club changed my life .”
Her passion for making the world better is also highlighted through Lopez ’ s work with children via The Maribel Foundation , a not-forprofit she started with her sister , Lynda . The Maribel Foundation ’ s mission is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of women and children and raising the level of medical care available to them .
