LATIN AMERICA OUTREACH ONLINE May-August 2024 | Page 15

worked with Pastor Diogo and his wife , Bea . Rod had mentored Diogo many years earlier when Diogo was a student at the seminary in Londrina during our days as OMS missionaries in Brazil . What a joy to now partner with Diogo as he welcomed our team to help launch an English ministry in their church and further their connections with schools in the city .
The first three days , we taught English in several schools . Our team led the Brazilian English learners in fun activities . They also engaged in conversation on the topic of Easter traditions and symbols . These days were full of Brazilian hospitality , including a churrasco ( Brazilian barbeque ).
On the last day of our school visits , “ abre a mão ” became relevant again as one of our teammates had to be hospitalized . We soon realized she would not likely rejoin the team . But God had a plan in place for her care . OMS missionaries John and Lisa Hamilton drove up from Uruguay to spend a few days with the team and share about OMS mission opportunities in Latin America . Lisa stayed with our student in the hospital while I led the team .
On our final morning , we gathered at the airport for a time of prayer with church members and shared tearful goodbyes . Our team learned the reality that when you “ abre a mão ,” yes , you are letting go , but your hands are also open to receive . Our faith has grown . The sick student is on the mend ; our friendships have deepened , now including “ gauchos ” of southern Brazil ; and our team saw ways that God may call them into service . What might God place in your hand when you “ abre a mão ”?
