Don’t you wish your students had these abilities?
口 increased ability to pay attention.
口 improved working memory.
口 increased ability to “recover” from trying to multi-task.
口 less anxiety.
口 better physical health
Of course you do, but how can they gain them? The answer might be in mindfulness.
These traits are connected to mindfulness, according to a thorough synthesis of peer-
reviewed research articles in “A-level journals” by Goleman and Richardson (2017). Jon
Kabat-Zinn, an MIT Ph.D. who founded the Center for Mindfulness, Health Care and
Society at the U of Mass Medical School helped bring mindfulness to science; his crystal
clear definition:
Paying attention,
on purpose,
in the present moment,
nonjudgementally
(as if your life depended on it).
Mindfulness is increasingly being recognized as a learning skill, and we predict its use in
school will increase. So, let us examine how we might tap into this amazing skill.
