abta_abta 12/07/2013 18:01 Page 1 PREVIEW T he event (August 6-8, Transamérica Expo Center) focuses on innovation in video services, showcasing new technologies and solutions for content distribution such as video on demand, IPTV and over the top (OTT) platforms, as well as the growing innovations in linear and high definition content distribution. In line with expansion of the Brazilian pay television industry, which for eight years has grown at an annual rate of more than 20% and currently has almost 16 million customers, ABTA Expo and Conference is the indispensable forum for discussion of new business models and content distribution platforms, innovative connected home technologies and advancing residential broadband access. A wide range of conference sessions will address the opportunities available in the region, with an opening panel looking at ‘A new growth cycle.’ The convergence of pay-TV, broadband and telephony over the past few decades has driven a strong growth cycle characterised by combined service offerings, competition and innovation. Organisers note that growth since 2003 has been fivefold, with the number of video subscribers reaching more than 17m, the number of broadband users exceeding 6m, and the number of voice customers rising to about 5m. HD content is now a constant presence in Brazilian homes. Pay-TV covers practically every city via DTH, while cable and fibre networks are expanding to more and more cities. Innovation is also present in new forms of content delivery – on demand, via broadband networks, non-linear, over-the-top. Brazil has a new legal and regulatory framework, new players in distribution, and new content providers, and is preparing for a new growth cycle. A subsequent panel takes a global view of the future of pay-TV, where some of the leading operators and programmers in Brazil compare their views of the industry’s present and future with international experience. The idea is to understand common challenges, exchange information, and offer a new perspective on the development of the market. With 2014 and 2016 seeing Brazil host the Latin America’s leading trade show for the pay-TV and broadband sectors is set for another bumper year. Here’s an overview of what’s happening in São Paulo. FIFA football World Cup and the Olympic Games, ABTA 2013’s closing session offers a light-hearted, relaxed discussion of the market for sports programming today, cost and distribution challenges, the views of clubs and athletes on the pay-TV market, what to expect from programming during the events, and how this will affect the daily lives of operators, other channels, and above all subscribers. Other panels include one looking at new prospects for monetising content. Distribution, programming and content production are changing in response to expansion of over-thetop platforms and on-demand content delivery, integration of pay-TV platforms with delivery of content via the Internet, and new business models. The prospects for monetising all this content and the practical results of existing experiences will be addressed. A further session looks at the new opportunities that are opening up for content. With almost R$1 billion set aside in the Agência Nacional do Cinema’s budget for the Audiovisual Sector Fund, the government has an opportunity to help the domestic content industry develop. How will the money be invested? What are the market’s needs? How is pay-TV influencing production? On the show floor, event organisers report a 30% increase in overseas exhibitors, reflecting the growing importance of the region. Included among the blue chip companies present in São Paulo are Accedo, Arris, Aurora Networks, Broadcom, Broadpeak, Conax, Coship, Discovery Network, Elemental, Harmonic, Hitron Technologies, NAGRA Kudelski, Pace, SMIT, Think Analytics, Verimatrix, Viaccess-Orca and WISI. Content delivery networks (CDN) and high-performance video-on-demand (VOD) server specialist Broadpeak will showcase a range of its technologies at the event. For the first time in South America, Broadpeak will demonstrate umbrellaCDN, a revolutionary solution — geared toward content providers — that makes the allocation of content to multiple CDNs possible. Broadpeak will also feature C-CAS and nanoCDN, two powerful new CDN technologies that streamline the delivery of advanced TV services while reducing operational expenses for operators. By addressing the needs of both operators and content providers, Broadpeak provides the full package for advanced content delivery. Utilising Broadpeak’s umbrellaCDN solution, content providers can allocate the ideal CDN for their content according to various criteria such as content format, end-user location, content provider, quality, or time of day. The solution also offers the possibility to centralise content geoblocking to manage the sending of replacement content and the modelling of quotas.
