A laparotomy sponge is a highly absorbent and tightly-woven cotton gauze with radiopaque tapes or a detectable X-ray string on the sides. Laparotomy sponges are of two types: sterile and nonsterile. The sponge is placed under the edge of an incision to protect soft tissues and exposed organs during surgery. It absorbs blood and exudates from the incised region at target site.
